Bridges out on 259

Hwy 259

I'd hoped to discover a string of valley Ninga's on 259. Alas, it was not to be. All the roads are out. To go north I'd have to go to 270 - meaning take the Transcanada to Brandon - or 83. I think you know which way I went...

Virden

Km - forgot to look!
Hwy 83 and 1

It was no Ninga, but there was good stuff to see in Virden.

Lots and lots of sweet brick and stone houses:

Beside it was a church:

More houses:

Historic downtown:

The Alexandria:
(it was painted pepto pink)

The bookstore was playing Leonard Cohen.

Awesome railway station:

Hwy 83 N of Hwy 2

I've been seeing a few shot-up signs, none quite so thoroughly as this one.

Lots of smashed glass under it too. Make of this what you will. It is socially significant somehow.

Good job, persons in the passenger seat. Good job.

Pipestone

Km 565
Hwy 83

Desirous of a new Che shirt and some Fimo beads, I pulled in to check out the local headshops. Turns out there aren't any. I did find a pretty little church though:

Broomhill and Bede

Km 545
Hwy 345

I didn't see the hill, I'm guessing 'broom' refers to the little flower. Sounds pretty. Wrong time of the year I guess.

I did find this crazy concrete building:

And this:

There was a cemetery and a brick schoolhouse at Bede. They sold cinnamon buns and trumpeting folk art angels. The piano on the porch was olive-y green... . I didn't manage a decent shot of it.

Lyleton

Km 460
Highway 251

Southwestern most Manitoba town on the map. That was reason enough for me!

Oil derrick on the roadside:

Not much at Lyleton. People live there. Mb Historical Society listed it as a ghost town site. There appeared to be townwide wifi which I couldn't sign on to. Mts 3G has been spotty down here.

Headed out 251 to 256 north to Pierson (km 480), where I grabbed some cherry tomatoes and peanuts from the co-op grocery. Parkinglot sandwich and off again, north on 256, aiming for Virden and an interesting looking stretch of the 259 with a bunch of little towns along it.

no comments please. Email to dobsontcc-AT-gmail.com

Melita

Km 420

Oh Melita, so incongruous with your fading banana effigies and balmy weather.

Museum:

Cannon aiming mechanism:

Cannon Itself:

I missed shooting the Banana. It was raining and crappy and late so I stayed in the motel. Video highlights to follow.

Inventory

What I'm packing:

A milkcrate library, full of tales of sorrow and redemption:

Bag of cameras:

(and yet I haven't shot a single frame on a real camera all day...  WTF is that about?  There's a whackload of film in the cooler in the trunk)

Guitar and paper

Sustenance:
 (that's right, it's basil)

Hipsterwear circa 2005:

(or 1997)
